Our Conference this year was a great success! The focus was on analysing and planning structured support for EAL learners that takes into account the demands of topics and academic English in subject areas. The Keynote was delivered by Jonathan Brentnall, EAL Adviser, and it was followed by a range of workshops. Jonathan’s workshop encouraged us to break down structures in the language we use across the curriculum – in order to analyse our expectations from students.
Danny Diaz and Rehana Ahmed aimed their workshop at Early Years and KS1. Their enthusiasm and passion was appreciated by participants, who shared practical ideas for pre-teaching topics and gained new strategies to take back to school.
Andy Harvey and Li Yen French led a workshop on ‘Setting appropriate targets to ensure rapid progress of EAL pupils’. They discussed and shared structured approaches which would enable teachers to deliver more complex texts to EAL pupils at KS1 and KS2. Participants found it useful to see how topic based activities can be differentiated to meet the needs of children on different code bands.
Manny Vazquez focused on KS3 and KS4 EAL progress and gave very practical examples of how to move pupils through language levels. As always, participants appreciated the curriculum related activities and the range of ideas for use back in the classroom.
